Lincoln Heritage Museum to host Laura Keyes in a Living History Presentation on Thursday, October 9

[October 04, 2025]  LINCOLN, IL — The Lincoln Heritage Museum is pleased to host Laura Keyes on Thursday, October 9, at 6 PM in a living history presentation, where she will take on the role of Lucy Pettengill, a resident of Peoria, IL, in March 1857. Lucy will tell us about the struggles she and her fellow abolitionists are encountering as they assist freedom seekers on their way north to freedom.

Come hear the story of the efforts of the people who worked the Underground Railroad from someone who was there! Mrs. Pettengill will share the details of the abolitionist movement and its actions in Western Illinois and explain why her work was not only secret but also dangerous.

Laura Keyes holds a Master’s Degree in Library Studies from UW-Madison and is a lifetime member of the Association of Lincoln Presenters. Ms. Keyes received the Excellence in Performing Award from that Association.

The Lincoln Heritage Museum would like to thank Ms. Keyes and Historic Voices (facebook.com/HistoricVoices) for their partnership in this event. To find out even more about Ms. Keyes, please also visit her website at www.LauraFKeyes.com.

The presentation will not be recorded and can only be experienced live the night of October 9. This special presentation is being done in conjunction with the Museum’s “Journey to Freedom: Illinois’ Underground Railroad” special exhibit.

The regular hours for the Lincoln Heritage Museum are 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturdays. The Museum is located at 1115 Nicholson Road in Lincoln, Illinois.
