Colorectal cancer remains a significant public health concern in
Illinois and nationwide. In Illinois, an estimated about 6,600
people will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer and more than 2,400
people will die from it each year, and colorectal cancer is one of
the most common cancers in both men and women. Screening
significantly improves early detection and survival.
Locally, cancer registry data show that Logan County has a
colorectal cancer incidence rate of about 42.7 cases per 100,000
people, which is similar to the state average, highlighting the
importance of regular screenings.
Despite the availability of effective tests, many adults are not up
to date with recommended screenings. Regular screenings are
important because they can prevent colorectal cancer or catch it
early when treatment is most successful

“We want all Logan County adults to
be aware of their risk and get screened,” said Kara Davis, Director
of Nursing of the Logan County Department of Public Health. “These
free at-home kits provide a simple way to take the first step toward
early detection.”
The at-home kits are easy to use and require no special preparation.
Supplies are limited and will be distributed on a first-come,
first-served basis.
Colorectal cancer screening is
generally recommended for adults beginning at age 45 and continuing
through age 75, though individuals with family history or other risk
factors should speak with their healthcare provider about earlier
testing.
