New Holland American Legion
Auxiliary spreads the news; Mildred R. Knoles Scholarship awarded
[July 24, 2026]
At the recent Department of
Illinois American Legion Auxiliary Convention in Springfield, July
9-11, New Holland Unit 715 was pleased to have its scholarship
applicant receive a Mildred R Knoles Scholarship. In addition the
Unit's entry in the Americanism Essay competition placed second in
Class 1 - 7th & 8th Grades in Department competition.
Malena Kirgan, New Holland, was the
recipient of a Mildred R. Knoles Scholarship. The Mildred R Knoles
Scholarship is for students who have received an Education
scholarship in the past and can apply for this scholarship in their
Sophomore, Junior, and Senior years in college and graduate work.

Malena received a check for $1,000
from ALA Department President Jill Layton, right of Malena, and
Department Education Chairman Kathy Cisna, (left). Malena is a
senior at Southern Illinois University studying agricultural
education.

Talley Sullivan, Mason City, placed
second in Class I - 7th & 8th Grades in the Department of Illinois
competition. In order for her essay to have reached Department
level, the essay had been judged and received 1st place on three
other levels of ALA competition; the Unit, District, and Division.
From the Division it was sent to the Department. Talley is the
daughter of Pastor Brandon and Lesley Sullivan, Mason City. Talley
is homeschooled.
