Second annual Elkhart area Community Firefly Walk and Picnic

[May 21, 2026]  The Elkhart Illinois Historical Society warmly invites the community to join them for the free 2nd Annual Firefly and Picnic Walk on Friday June 12th with our guide Allen Yow.

An avid bird watcher, Yow became curious about the fireflies as he noticed the different patterns and colors. As you will learn on the walk, these differences allow the fireflies to find the right mating group and help us to identify them. Yow, will teach you about the life cycle, the different kinds of fireflies, and how to identify them from their glow to individual markings.

We will start the evening at the Nancy Jane Moore Community Park (109 Stellar St. in Elkhart, Illinois), at 6:00 p.m. for a BYO picnic dinner. The park playground will be open for children.

For those who want to take part in the walk only, please arrive at the park no later than 7:30 p.m. The caravan to Elkhart Hill will start at 7:40 p.m. for the walk and lecture portion of the evening. Please apply all bug repellants at the park before caravanning as they can harm our star attraction.

To reserve your spot, please contact the Elkhart Illinois Historical Society at (217) 947-2238 or email elkhart.hist.soc@gmail.com with your name and the number attending.

In case of inclement weather, the walk will be rescheduled for Friday the 19th of June.
