4-H Cattle Show at the Logan County Fair

[August 07, 2026]  The annual 4-H Beef Show was held at the Logan County Fair on Thursday, August 6th. This show allows participants to present their cattle for judging. The show started with the steers before moving on to the heifers, and ended with three classes of showmanship: junior, intermediate, and senior.

This year’s judge was Preston Rhode. Rhode grew up raising cattle on a farm in Central Illinois. He also shows pigs at various competitions. Rhode received a bachelor’s degree in animal science at Oklahoma State University, and is pursuing a Master’s degree from the University of Illinois.

As competitors showed their animals, Rhode would take time examining them. He viewed them from a distance and up close. He would then explain why he chose each winner. Rhode would describe what he liked about each animal and provide constructive feedback on what could be improved.

Miss Logan County Fair, Grace Carter, arrived near the start of the show to hand out ribbons and banners to the winners of each class and category. Carter stayed for the duration of the event.

The steer show began with the Black Angus cattle, followed by the Hereford, Shorthorn, Simmental, any other breed, and then commercial heifers. Competitors brought each animal into the barn and did one lap before organizing themselves, and their steer, facing the entrance door. Some classes had just one or two while others had half a dozen or more. The competitors would line their cattle up one after the other, sometimes having to take a short lap if their animal needed to be moved.

After each class, Rhode explained what he liked about each steer and assigned first place and beyond depending on entrants. Winners of each class then returned to be chosen as champion and reserve champion steer of their category.

The following are the champion and reserve champion winners for each steer category:

● Black Angus:
○ Champion: Kaden Entwistle
○ Reserve Champion: Madisen Wurth

At the end of the steer show, a grand champion and reserve grand champion steer were chosen from all the winning cattle. This year’s grand champion is Kaden Entwistle and the reserve grand champion is Grayson Foran. The British breeds champion was Entwistle while Kane Komnick brought home reserve.

A few minutes after the steer show, the heifer show began. Categories included Black Angus, Red Angus, Hereford, Shorthorn, Simmental, and then papered other breeds.

Much like the steer show, participants led their heifer on a lap around the barn to be judged. A champion and reserve champion were chosen for each of the categories as well. Below are the results:
