Cake Classic raises $4075 for the
Logan County 4-H Foundation

As the 90th Logan County Fair
wound down Sunday, a 59-year tradition continued with six cakes
being baked before a live audience then auctioned off to the highest
bidders to raise money for 4-H.
Judging the cakes was Tami Thomas, who attended The Culinary
Institute of America and has worked in the baking industry. She
commented on the taste and appearance of each cake then wrote down
the total scores.
The fair book explains that cakes are judged “based on quality,
flavor, texture and appearance and not on presentation or stage
presence of the participant.”
McEntire’s Appliance provides the stoves used for the competition
and Darlene Begolka provides the Tupperware. Boxes for the cakes
were provided by Hillary Rempe.
When the cakes were auctioned off, Jennifer Luckhart, who was
helping oversee the auction, shared information about their texture
and flavors.
Along with cake classic veterans Rose Harrold, Peggy Sanders, Jeanne
Runyon were newcomers Elizabeth Edersheim and Liddy Coers. Last
year’s first place cake baker Olivia Wrage returned for the second
year.
Those who enjoy baking cakes are encouraged to join the culinary
competition next year as there were fewer bakers this year.
There were six cakes auctioned off by Tucker raised a total of
$4075, which will go directly to 4-H to support their programs.
At $400, the Culler family was the top bidder for the first-place
cake.
First place went to Rose Harrold,
who baked a white velvet cake. She also won Friday’s culinary
competition. The Culler family donated a Longaberger basket for the
winner, which is a tradition.
Second place: new participant
Elizabeth Edersheim’s German chocolate cake.
The top bidder for the second-place cake was the Culler family again
with a bid of $800.
Third place: veteran Peggy Sander’s
baker’s choice chocolate gingerbread cake.
Top bidder for the third-place cake
was Larry Stanfield with a bid of $750.

Fourth place: Jeanne Runyon’s
maple pecan cake.
Top bidder was Jackson of Action
Jackson Lawn Care at $900.
Fifth place: Last year’s winner Olivia Wrage’s chocolate cake with
chocolate icing.
Top bidder was Stacy Goodman with
$750.
Sixth place: Liddy Coer’s yellow
cake with chocolate frosting decorated with little bees.
Top bidder was Angela Reiners at
$475.
Once the auction was over, those who baked cakes posed with their
top bidder. A few posed with 2026 Logan County Fair Queen Grace
Carter.
As the grand total of $4075 demonstrates, these bidders love to
support a great cause and at the same time get to enjoy a delicious
cake.
