Elkhart Public Library hosts
butterfly release

Elkhart Public Library hosted a
butterfly release on Friday evening, July 31st. This unique event
featured crafts, cupcakes, Kona Ice, and live butterflies. Tiffany
Skeens organized the butterfly release in honor of her late best
friend’s birthday. Just days before he passed, she explained to him
that she was doing a similar event with butterflies. He called it
“doing your butterfly thing.” Since then, she has continued the
tradition of honoring her friend’s memory with a butterfly release.
The library was decorated inside
with colorful balloons and there were craft tables set up. The first
craft was a clothespin butterfly. The second was a paint-by-number
colorful canvas, and the third was a cupcake decorating station.
There were giveaways including bracelets and flower seed packets to
help attract butterflies. Outside, Kona Ice was serving their
popular snow cones in an array of flavors.

As 6:30 p.m. drew closer, families
gathered outside awaiting the distribution and release of
butterflies. Tiffany passed out the butterflies, which were “asleep”
in their tiny envelopes. After a few instructions, the countdown
began. The crowd gasped as envelopes were opened, butterflies
emerged and then took flight. Some giggled as butterflies landed on
people throughout the crowd.
