Obituary

Dorothy Jean Hagen, of Chicago, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 14, at the age of 97, surrounded by family. Born on August 26, 1929, in Lincoln, Illinois, Dorothy was the daughter of Peter and Catherine (Weise) Hagen and the youngest of their eight children.

Graveside services will be held at 11 AM October 29, 2026 at Hartsburg Union Cemetery. Holland Barry & Bennett Funeral Hime is assisting the family.

Dorothy grew up in Lincoln, where she attended elementary and high school. She continued her education at Lincoln College, graduating before attending the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana for one year.

In 1952, Dorothy moved to Chicago, where she would make her home for more than seven decades. She began her professional career at Needham Louis and Brorby, a Chicago advertising agency, where she worked for five years. She later worked for KOF Engineering before joining Encyclopaedia Britannica, where she spent the final 26 years of her career.

Dorothy built a full and independent life in Chicago, but she never lost her connection to Lincoln, the town where she grew up. She remained proud of her roots and will be laid to rest there at a later date.

Dorothy is survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She will be remembered with love by her family and friends and by all the lives she touched with her strong faith, generosity, and compassion for those less fortunate.

A memorial service will be held at First Saint Paul's Lutheran Church, 1301 North Lasalle Drive, on November 19 at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Saint Paul's Lutheran Church.
