Obituary

David H. Katz, affectionately known as “Super Dave,” passed away peacefully on May 18, 2025, in Bloomington, IL, surrounded by his loving family. He was 87 years old.

Born in Lincoln, IL, on December 30, 1937, Dave was the only child of Harold and Esther Katz (née Johnson). He graduated from Lincoln Community High School in 1955 and spent his entire life in Lincoln, where he built a legacy of hard work, creativity, and kindness.

Dave was a farmer for over 40 years, deeply connected to the land and Logan County community. In 1977, he bought and lovingly renovated The Lincoln Depot, which he transformed into an upscale restaurant that quickly became a beloved spot for both locals and travelers. It was there he met his future wife, Rebecca Jones. The two were married on May 21, 1988, in a beautiful ceremony at Funk’s Grove.

Never one to sit still, Dave founded Tri-Square Construction in 1988, continuing his passion for building and craftsmanship. He was a man of many talents and hobbies; he loved to fish, play pool, basketball or softball and was always up for a competitive game of Gin or Euchre.

A man of faith, Dave was a long-time member of Faith Lutheran Church, where he served as an elder and trustee for many years. His faith guided his life and his relationships with others.

Dave was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Katz (née Jones); their three daughters: Lisa Jo (Paul) Abbo of Chicago, Bobbie Jo (Nathan) Jones of Lincoln, Kendall Katz and her partner (James Kasher) of East Peoria and two children from his previous marriage to Judith Alexander, Debra (John) Barr of Naperville and Lynette (Gene) Harker of Indianapolis. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Justin Barr, Brooklyn (Jason) Anhalt, Jordan Barr, Alex (Sarah) Harker, Hayleigh (Adam) Kanzler, Rebecca Abbo, and Evan Abbo; nine great-grandchildren and his mother-in-law and long time caregiver, Linda Jones.

He was preceded to heaven by his parents, Harold and Esther Katz, as well as his beloved aunts and uncles.

A visitation will be held from 12 PM to 2 PM on Sunday, May 25, 2025, at Holland Barry & Bennett Funeral Home in Lincoln, IL. A celebration of life service will follow at 2 PM with Dave’s cousin, Corey Campbell officiating.

To honor Dave’s legacy, the family kindly requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the family in care of Lisa Abbo to help reduce funeral expenses.

Dave’s warmth, humor, faith, and unwavering love for his family will be deeply missed but joyfully remembered by all who knew him.
