Obituary
Richard F. “Dick”
Romer, 81, of Springfield, IL, passed away on
Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at Springfield Suites.
Dick was born on July 13, 1944, in Lincoln, IL, the
son of Roman and Dorothy (Davis) Romer. He married
Barbara Austin on August 12, 1967, in Owensboro, KY.
She survives.
Dick is also survived by his daughter, Sara Jill
(Todd) Ballenger; three grandchildren, Roman, Ruth,
and Rose; and his brother, Joe (Emily) Romer. He is
also survived by several nieces, nephews, and
cousins.
Dick is preceded in death by his parents; four
brothers, Tom, Bob, Jim, and Steve Romer; two
sisters, Lynne Baylis and Joan Suycott.
Dick was born and raised in Mt. Pulaski where he
attended St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. He
played both baseball and basketball and played
trumpet in the band at Mt. Pulaski High School,
where he then graduated in 1962. He attended
Kentucky Wesleyan College where he played baseball
and met his wife, Barb. |

Dick spent many years
in education teaching, coaching, and working for the
Illinois State Board of Education. Dick was a
faithful member of Christ the King Catholic Church
in Springfield. He was an active member of the
Knights of Columbus, and a longtime member of the
YMCA in Springfield. He was an avid golfer and
handball player. Dick also enjoyed woodworking and
was a well-known clock collector and repairman.
A prayer vigil for
Dick will be held Thursday, April 9, 2026, at 4:45
pm at Christ the King Catholic Church in
Springfield, IL. A visitation will follow the vigil
on Thursday at the church from 5:00 – 7:00 pm. The
following day, Friday, April 10, 2026, an additional
visitation for Dick will be held from 9:00 to 11:00
am immediately followed by an 11:00 am Funeral Mass
at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Mt.
Pulaski, IL. Burial will follow the services at Mt.
Pulaski Cemetery.
Memorials may be made in Dick’s memory to St. Jude
Children’s Research Hospital or St. Thomas Aquinas
Catholic Church. Funeral Arrangements have been
entrusted to Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in
Mt. Pulaski.
