Obituary
Janet Holmes, 87, of
Lincoln, IL, passed away Thursday, March 19, 2026.
Janet was born October 17, 1938, in Vandalia, IL,
the daughter of Elbert “Bill” and Nelda Hopkins. She
married Harold Holmes on August 12, 1955. He
preceded her in death on June 16, 1991.
While her children were young, Janet was lucky
enough to be a cook at Chester East Lincoln, the
school they attended. Later when Burwell’s added a
deli to their truck stop, Janet was hired to be
their manager. Then in 1983, along with her husband
they purchased the Atlanta Bowl, where she continued
to build lasting relationships until 2011.
Janet is survived by three children, Rick (Michelle)
Holmes of Normal, Robyn (Marty) Yarcho, and Rhonda
Morris of Lincoln; grandchildren, Aron (Kelsey)
Applegate, Ryan (Maggie) Holmes, Jason Yarcho,
Asleigh Neitzel, Jordan (Lexi Clark) Yarcho, and
Sydny (Josh) Baker; and great-grandchildren,
Madeleine and McKenzie Applegate, Nolan, Leighton,
Camryn, and Nash Neitzel, and Beckett and Kynlee
Baker. She is also survived by her siblings, Charles
(Loretta) Hopkins of Florida, Sue (Dave) Snodgrass
of Ferdinand, ID, Cheri (Vernie) Spies of
Greenville, IL, and several dear nieces and nephews. |

She was preceded in
death by her parents, husband, brother, Gary
Hopkins, and sister-in-law and best friend, Linda
Hopkins.
Janet did not know a stranger, she started her day
off going to Casey’s for her daily coffee, doughnut,
and most importantly an opportunity to visit with
others.
A private family graveside service will be held at
Mt. Pulaski Cemetery. Memorials may be made in
Janet’s name to Camp Hope in Bloomington, IL.
Arrangements have been entrusted to
Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.
