Obituary

James “Jim” L. Johnson, 93, of Bloomington, Illinois, left this earthly life on March 4, 2026.

Jim was born to Oren Brock and Alma Leesman Johnson on March 2,1933. He and his sisters Mary Jane, Joyce, and Judy were raised in Atlanta, Illinois. He graduated from Atlanta High School in 1951.

Jim married his wife of 67 years, Barbara “Barb” Brandt, on March 29, 1958. Together they moved to Minier, where they spent most of their life, and had a daughter, Pamela (Gregory) Lee, and a son, Andrew Johnson. Jim found great joy in loving his two grandchildren, Kristen Lee (Luke) Arnold and Ryan (Tori) Lee. His four great-granddaughters, Lorelei and Anabelle Arnold and Ryan and Tori’s two daughters were the lights of his life.

Jim proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean Conflict as a diesel mechanic. After his Military service, Jim returned to his career at Caterpillar where he would retire after 40 years. He was then employed by the Olympia C.U.S.D. #16 bus garage, servicing buses, and at times serving as a substitute bus driver.

In Jim’s early years, he attended Eminence Christian Church, rural Atlanta. After marriage, he became a member of Minier Christian Church, where he and Barb raised their family and enjoyed the community together. He was a member of the Minier Legion and a fierce euchre player.

For many years Jim grew fruits and vegetables in his garden and was well known for his horseradish. Jim enjoyed hunting deer and morel mushrooms, and fishing—all ways that he fed his family.

Jim valued time with his family and friends and often entertained with his wife at their Minier Lake cabin, where they were long-time members. If you were lucky enough to enjoy some of the fish that Jim fried, you know that his special batter recipe is one to remember.

Jim was very thankful for his time at Holly Brook Towanda Barnes, Bloomington. He was well loved and cared for by the staff and residents.

Jim is survived by his son-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brothers and sisters-in-law, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, mother and father-in-law, three sisters, wife, daughter, son, and brothers and sisters-in-law.

Services will be held at Minier Christian Church on Monday, March 9, 2026. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Minister Brady Cremeens will officiate. A brief graveside service will follow at Mountjoy Cemetery, rural Atlanta.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to LittleGalilee.org (LGCC) Fishing Camp in Jim’s memory.
