We’re all familiar
with lightning bugs, or fireflies, whose little
bodies produce a chemical reaction which causes a
small light to emit from its abdomen. Now, Korean
scientists have developed a cat that glows in the
dark. (I’ll bet it started glowing after too many
cat-scans). Deep in the sea there are creatures that
were created by God to emit light from their bodies.
There is even a fish called the “flashlight fish”
which has a luminescent organ just below its eyes.
It can turn its light on and off at will, presumably
to attract and blind its food.
Humans have made many other things that glow in the
dark: watches, pajamas, various toys, and now
diapers. Unlike the sea creatures and the fireflies,
these man-made novelties require exposure to a light
source before they can actually glow in the dark.
The stronger the light is, the closer the object is
to the light, and the longer it is exposed to the
light, the brighter the object will glow.
God wants us to glow in the dark. The world is often
a dark place. It’s not hard to see. Most news media
sources give nothing but bad news. Another shooting
on campus. Federal scandals. Dirty politics.
Economic struggles. Add to that all the crime,
abuses, and living in a sex-crazed culture. Anyone
can see the world is dark and evil.

“This is the verdict:
Light has come into the world, but people loved
darkness instead of light because their deeds were
evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and
will not come into the light for fear that their
deeds will be exposed.” John 3:19-20.
When we were without Jesus, we were actually part of
the darkness. But we’re not part of it anymore. “For
you were once darkness, but now you are light in the
Lord. Walk as children of light.” Ephesians 5:8.
We were called to shine in the darkness. The moon
has no light of its own, it only reflects light from
the sun. In the same way, we get our light from the
SON. Jesus shines in us and then through us. He will
not hide us from the world. Jesus said, “YOU are the
light of the world.” Now go shine!
