As the 88th Logan County Fair
neared its end, a 58 year tradition continued with several cakes
being baked and judged before a live audience then auctioned off to
the highest bidders to raise money for 4-H.

Judging the cakes was Micah
Wakefield, who went to Culinary school in Seattle and has worked as
an executive chef in the baking industry. She made comments on the
taste and appearance of each cake then wrote down the total scores.
Along with many veterans in the cake classic were new competitors
Olivia Wrage and Neely Petty.
Cake Classic Superintendent Samantha Danosky is thankful for the
sponsors such as McEntire’s Appliance, Darlene Begolka and Little
Brown Cow Dairy who make the cake classic possible.
There were eight cakes auctioned off by Ty Tucker, which raised
$6225. This amount will go directly to Logan County 4-H to support
their programs.

At a record $2000, Nathan “Nibs”
Giesky was top bidder for the first place cake.
First place went to newcomer Olivia Wrage, who is just 12 years old.
Her cake was a blueberry lemon cake, which was the baker’s choice
cake. Though Wrage was new to this competition, she previously won
awards for baked goods in the children’s section.
Culler donated a basket for the winner, which is a cake classic
tradition.

Second Place: Carlene Carter’s
angel food cake. Carter is a long time veteran of the cake classic
who sat out for years and then returned last year with an eighth
place finish.
The top bidder for the second place cake was the Culler family at
$700.

Third Place: Jeanne Runyon’s maple
pecan chiffon.
The top bidder for the third place
cake was Jim Xamis at $525. As Xamis has done for several years, he
then donated the cake back to be auctioned again. This time Stacy
Goodman won the bidding at $425.

Fourth Place: Peggy Sanders-German
Chocolate Cake. Sanders has competed several times.
Top bidder was Joel Ritchart at $375.
Other classic cakes auctioned off included:

Fifth place: Rebekah
Johnson-Chocolate Chocolate Cake. Like several others, Johnson is no
stranger to the competition. She has even served as the cake classic
superintendent in the past.
Top bidder was Jackson Johnson at $800.

Sixth place: Darlene Crider-Red
Velvet Cake. Crider is another veteran in the cake classic as well
as being Carlene Carter’s identical twin and Rebekah Johnson’s
mother.
Top bidder was the Stanfield family at $425.

Seventh Place: Rose Harold-White
Cake with butter.
Top bidder was Stacy Goodman at $525.

Eighth Place: Neely Petty-Yellow
Cake with Chocolate.
Top bidder was Jim Xamis at $625.
After each cake was auctioned off, those who baked cakes posed with
their top bidder and Logan County Fair Queen Julia Collins, Junior
Miss Courtney Cecil and Little Miss Vayda Farmer.
As the grand total of $6225 demonstrates, these bidders love to
support a great cause and also get to enjoy a delicious cake.
