Halloween came early at the Lincoln
Park District on Thursday, October 29 at the annual Halloween
Funfest. A packed parking lot gave the first clue to the prodigious
number of people, costumes, and candy onsite at the indoor tennis
courts. Pumpkins, princesses, and superheroes mingled with
dinosaurs, cowboys, mermaids, and ghosts while roaming the courts in
search of treats and sweets. The tiny fantastical creatures tried
their hand at a variety of games set up by over 20 local businesses
and organizations. Every contestant was a winner as children were
presented with a choice of candy from brimming bowls after
attempting challenges such as ring toss, candy corn bowling, or
chucking toilet paper rolls through a “witches’ pot” that bore
strong resemblance to a toilet seat. There were also play areas,
photo opportunities, and concessions, plus a children’s obstacle
course that was new this year.

Lincoln Park District Executive
Director Becky Strait appreciated the large turnout from the
community that came to enjoy the event. She said, “Thanks to the
community for coming out. And thank you to community members and
local organizations for making this event possible. A special thank
you to the students of the Lincoln Community High School National
Honor Society and Move Club for setting up and helping.”
Many parents and grandparents had also caught the Halloween spirit
and joined the children in costume. Volunteers, including members of
the LCHS National Honor Society and Move Club, kept the candy bowls
filled and the encouragement coming, resulting in many hundreds of
happy Trick-or-Treaters by the end of the night.
