Second
grader Laila Fulk of Mt. Pulaski was sworn in as “Mayor for a Day”
on Thursday morning. She was joined at City Hall by a group of third
graders from Washington Monroe, for whom the Lincoln Fire Department
had served a pancake and sausage breakfast. After breakfast, the
group met with Mayor Tracy Welch, who showed them around his office
and took time to answer their questions. With encouragement from his
teacher, one student asked Mayor Welch what his favorite part of the
job is. Welch said his favorite part is helping people and teaching
young children, since they are the future leaders. Then the third
graders headed down to the firehouse for a tour with Chief Johnson.
Meanwhile, Laila Fulk was set to spend time with Mayor Welch
learning about what the job entails. After some “official” photos in
the mayor’s chair, she received an official name tag, nameplate, and
a frame with her official oath. Laila said that she wanted to be a
boss over a lot of people. After the event, she said that she had
fun and got to meet a lot of people. She also enjoyed seeing how she
can help the community get things done.
