The Abraham Lincoln National
Railsplitting Festival was held on the weekend of September 20th and
21st in Lincoln. This festival was held on the grounds of the
Postville Courthouse on 5th Street. While the weather was
exceptionally rainy on Saturday, Sunday ended up being much dryer.
The amateur railsplitting contest was held around 11:00 a.m on
Sunday. This event was supposed to be held on Saturday but was
rained out. This pushed back the start of the Tomahawk Throwing
Contest by a bit, but not too long.

Before 11:30 a.m., practice
throwing for the contest began, with many people taking turns on the
two lanes that were open for throwing. Each thrower threw their
tomahawk at a round chunk of wood propped up by some wooden legs.

Once everyone was finished
practicing, contest organizer Bob Rankin explained the rules for the
contest. A playing card was stapled to each piece of wood, which
would be the target each person was aiming for. If the thrower
missed the card, but stuck the tomahawk in the wood, they would get
one point. If the tomahawk hit the card and stuck in the wood, the
thrower would get two points. Five points would be awarded for any
throw that cut the playing card in half from top to bottom. Each
thrower would be given the option of taking two practice throws,
which would be followed by five regular throws.

There were three divisions of
throwers, with the first being the junior division. The second was
the women's divisions, and the last was the men’s division. The
results for each division are as follows:
