Since the Railsplitter Festival
began many years ago, one of the popular events has been a tomahawk
throw contest. Three separate categories include a Junior tomahawk
throw for those sixteen and under, a women’s tomahawk throw and a
men’s tomahawk throw.
Before the contest started, several did practice throws. Just behind
the area where the contest was held, there was a board that younger
kids could throw plastic tomahawks at. Perhaps they will be future
contestants.
In the actual competition, contestants threw a tomahawk at a target
made of a section of a tree trunk. Scoring is based on the number of
tomahawks thrown and where the tomahawk hits the target. Hitting the
bullseye is worth five points. The rest of the scoring is between 0
and 4 points depending on how close the tomahawk is to the center.
The competition began with the
junior tomahawk throw, which had eleven participants. All made
valiant efforts, but in the end, there were three who scored the
most points. In first place was Zane Edgecombe followed by Roan
Vannoy in second place and Oliver Friedlein in third place.

In the women’s category, there were
ten participants. Though the first place winner was clear, there was
a “throw off” for second and third place. First place went to Heidi
Mueller, who has been in the contest for many years. Second place
went to Tammy Robertson followed by Abbey Wolski in third place.
The final category was the men’s
group with eleven participants. This group also had several who had
participated in previous years. First place went to Kyle Robertson
followed by Bobby Rankin in second place and Doug Knollenberg in
third place.
Many of the contestants then went on to participate in some of the
other railsplitting contests in the afternoon.
