On Friday, after the excitement of the
kickoff of Balloons Over 66, the balloon glow at Open Arms, the
first few rounds of Dock Dogs, competitions, food trucks, and
vendors, festival-goers gathered to unwind, listen to music, and
dance. Lick Creek drew a crowd to the corner of Kickapoo and
Pulaski. The courthouse made a great backdrop for an evening of fun.
People gathered in front of the stage to dance while others enjoyed
the show from the courthouse lawn in their chairs, and some lined
the streets and the sidewalks.
The band was playing a setlist featuring 90s country by Alabama,
Don Williams, and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. They also paid tribute
to country music icon Dolly Parton, who passed away on Tuesday. They
sang three of Dolly’s biggest hits: “Islands in the Stream,” her
duet with Kenny Rogers, “Jolene,” and “9 to 5.” Between songs, the
crowd chanted U.S.A and the band promised they would sing a
patriotic song soon. The lights of the food trucks and other
businesses downtown illuminated the streets as the crowd grabbed one
last treat before heading home for the evening. There was still a
line for Culler’s French fries and mini-donuts.
