On Sunday, August 24th, the annual
Shady Car Show was held at Memorial Park in Lincoln. This car show
is held here each year on the Sunday of the Balloons Over 66
weekend. The weather was a nice 75 degrees, with the trees of the
park providing plenty of shade from the sun.
There were 135 vehicle entries this year. The cars were set up in
rows around the park, with many of the owners of the vehicles
sitting in chairs nearby. Each of them were eager to talk to people
about their vehicle.

Mike and Judy Evans of Bloomington
were present with their green 1961 Rolls-Royce. Just next to the
Evans were Richard Charelton and Elaine Evans. Charlatan and Evans
were showing off their red 1944 Coupe. Mike and Judy Evans have
owned their car for about ten years, while Charleton has owned his
since 2007.

Bob and Lisa Gaston of Havannah,
Illinois were also present with a borrowed 1970 Chevy Nova. Bob
shared that a friend of his let his wife use the car in drag races.
The catch was that the Gastons had to put a motor in it, as it was
lacking one initially.

John and Heather Barrick, owners of
Lincoln businesses Barrick Transfer and Indigo Quilt Studio, had a
car to show off too. John shared that he purchased the green 1968
Chevy C10 for $250. The car was not in working order when he
acquired it, however. Three of the four tires were flat, it would
not run, there were no seats or a fuel tank, and the truck had no
bed. For all its faults, however, John saw the green and it reminded
him of how all of his family business's trucks were green until
1975. John restored the truck with his grandfather in mind.

JD’s DJ Services were also present
to ensure that no one’s time viewing cars was silent. They played
music over loud speakers that could be heard clearly at all ends of
the show. They also made announcements, such as the sale of 50/50
tickets. Each ticket was $1, and it was stated that they were trying
to get more sales than last year. At last year’s show, almost $2,000
of raffle tickets were sold. This year, they ended up selling about
$2,400 worth of tickets. The big winner was announced during the
awards ceremony at the end of the show. The gentleman who won
donated $400 of his winnings to the Lincoln Community High School
dance team, whose members were walking around during the show
selling the tickets.

At the awards ceremony, the top 25
cars were chosen, with each winner being given a trophy. As each
name was called, the owner of the car stepped up and received their
prize. There were also three special awards that were given out at
the end. The first was a sponsor’s choice award, chosen by sponsor
John Barrick, the second was the Founder’s Award in honor of Shady
Car Show founder Wayne Ackerman, and the last was the Best of Show.
The Best of Show award this year went to Carl Brady.
