Our experience in farming has taught
us that good farming begins with healthy soil, responsible
stewardship, and producing food that our community can trust. As a
family farm in central Illinois, we've seen firsthand that
agriculture succeeds when farmers have the flexibility to innovate
and respond to local needs.
That's why we're so alarmed by efforts to include the Save Our Bacon
Act in the next Farm Bill.
Despite its name, this proposal goes far beyond bacon. It would
override certain state agricultural standards for livestock products
sold in interstate commerce, taking decisions away from states and
communities that understand their own agricultural priorities.

The Farm Bill should focus on
supporting family farmers, strengthening rural communities,
expanding market opportunities, and protecting livestock from
threats like disease—not on overriding state authority.
Illinois has a proud agricultural
tradition built on innovation and independence. We urge Senators
Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth to reject any Farm Bill that
includes the Save Our Bacon Act and instead support policies that
help family farms thrive.
