Letters to the Editor

Lincoln Daily News welcomes letters of appreciation, information and opinion on matters pertaining to the community.

Controversial issues:
As a community we need to be able to talk openly about matters that affect the quality of our lives. The most effective and least offensive manner to get your point across is to stick to the issue and refrain from commenting on another person's opinion. Letters that deviate from focusing on the issue may be rejected or edited and marked as such.

 New tax on groceries

Send a link to a friend  Share

Every now and then, not often, the people of the State of Illinois get a treat in the form of tax reduction. It is not often as I can only remember two in my lifetime. The State decided to do away with the 1 percent tax on groceries effective 1 Jan 2026.

Don't get too happy about the prospect of a bit of tax relief. The City of Lincoln has decided to fill the tax void and relieve the citizens of their money by putting a 1 percent tax on groceries effective 1 Jan 2026. Nature abhors a vacuum and, apparently, so does the City of Lincoln. Therefore, friends and neighbors, kiss your tax break good bye.

[to top of second column in this letter]

This increase will effect almost all of Logan County. Lincoln is the shopping hub for the county, therefore many county residents who live outside of Lincoln will be paying this tax. We don't need more taxes on inelastic goods. I would urge all residents to speak out against this taxation.

Michael A. DeRoss
