On Monday evening, 40&8 Voiture 985
held its monthly meeting.
Commander Mike Kavanaugh called the meeting to order, and those in
attendance stood for the Pledge of Allegiance. Dan Benedict provided
the financial report. The members discussed the status of the
nursing scholarship program.
Commander Kavanaugh reminded members that they will need workers for
their pork chop and ribeye sandwich fundraiser at IGA in Lincoln on
Saturday, July 25, starting around 10 a.m. They are still exploring
other fundraising ideas. Gene Hickey reminded everyone that the
American Legion will hold an Independence Day celebration and grill
out after the 4th of July parade in Lincoln.
Commander Kavanaugh next introduced their fourth nursing scholarship
recipient, Abigail Goodman. Abigail graduated from Olympia High
School and is the daughter of Brett and Jamie Goodman of Atlanta.
Abigail explained that she plans to
attend Heartland Community College to earn her associate’s degree in
nursing, which she will complete in the spring of 2028. She then
plans to continue her nursing education at Heartland or Illinois
State University.

Abigail plans to
become a holistic nurse, focusing on nutrition and exercise. Dan
Benedict joined Commander Kavanaugh in presenting the $1,500
award. Abigail and her parents thanked the members for the
scholarship.
Before adjourning, the group discussed their upcoming officer
election and the need to plan for recruitment.
